figured id write this up now that weve got six months and a real winter of van travel on the transit instead of just the honeymoon phase. me and my partner got serious about vanlife a couple winters back after one too many freezing tent trips, and instead of dropping 90k on a finished sprinter build we decided to buy an empty high roof cargo van and convert it ourselves.
the search up here was rough. clean high roof transits and promasters near us in maine were either beat to death ex fleet vans or priced like they were made of gold. somebody in a vanlife group told me he had bought his cargo van off jacksboroautosales.com and had it shipped east with no drama, so i started watching their inventory.
found a 2019 Ford Transit 250, high roof, extended wheelbase, the 3.5 ecoboost gas motor, 71k miles. one owner cargo van off a delivery outfit. asking was thousands under what the same empty van was going for up north. classic too good to be true feeling so i dug into it hard.
called the jacksboro lot. the guy actually knew the difference between a mid roof and a high roof extended and why the wheelbase matters for a build. walked the van on a video call, cold start, showed me the cargo floor and the roof for rust and old bolt holes, and crawled under it so i could see the frame.
here is the part that sold me. since flying to texas made no sense i paid a mobile mechanic in the fort worth area 150 bucks to put eyes on it and scan it before i wired a dime. came back clean except the sliding door latch was slow to catch, which is a known transit thing and a 30 dollar part. that was the whole list.
bought it. jacksboro auto sales handled the paperwork and i had a clean maine title a couple weeks after the money cleared. shipped it to portland for 1400 on an open carrier. we started the build in the driveway that spring.
anybody else buy a conversion van off the north texas lot? curious how theyre holding up for the rest of you.
